A.H. Stephens State Historic Park covers 1,200 acres and was created to provide recreational facilities and to preserve the Taliaferro County estate of A.H. Stephens, vice-president of the Confederacy and governor of Georgia. The park was opened during the Great Depression as a result of F.D. Roosevelt's New Deal programs. The park was originally a national park under the U.S. Department of Interior's National Park Service. The majority of the structures and facilities on the park were the result of the labor of C.C.C. and W.P.A. workers. The camp housing these workers was on the site of the existing tent and trailer campground. Their water/observation tower still exists in the center of the campground. The park is now listed on theNational Register of Historic Places.

Liberty Hall, the estate of A.H. Stephens, is renovated to the 1875 style, fully furnished and open for public tours. The adjoining Civil War Museum will lead you down the "Road to War" from homelife to battlefield. A fine collection of Civil War artifacts includes firearms, uniforms, documents and much more. Beautiful outdoor facilities make this park a treat for both nature and history buffs.

A Georgia ParkPass is required to be displayed on all parked vehicles in the park. Visitors may pay a daily parking fee ($2.00) at collection boxes or purchase an annual parking pass ($25.00). The Georgia ParkPass is valid at all state parks visited the same day. Overnight guest in state park lodges, cottages and campgrounds pay one fee for the duration of their stay when they register. Organized school groups visiting in buses are exempt. Wednesdays are free days for day-use visitors. An annual Georgia ParkPass may be purchased at all state parks and historic sites. Senior citizen discounts (62 and older) are available. Georgia ParkPass revenues are used for repair and maintenance of Georgia's state parks, historic sites and natural areas.
